Character Cards and World Cards

Keep the person's behavior in the character definition. Put facts shared by everyone in the setting into a World Card.

The distinction is about who needs the information. A personal habit belongs to one character; a city rule can affect everyone.

One setting, two people

Imagine a harbor where ferries stop running at nine. A dispatcher is determined to leave on schedule. An engineer wants to stay and investigate a broken radio.

Put the ferry rule and harbor layout in the world notes. Put the dispatcher's impatience in one character definition and the engineer's curiosity in the other. Their disagreement gives the opening scene something to work with.

If they later agree to delay the ferry, that agreement is an event in this story. Keep it in the current conversation's saved information rather than changing every version of the harbor.

When to add a separate world

A short, one-character exchange may need only a clear definition and greeting. Add a world when several characters depend on the same background, or when revising a location in multiple biographies becomes hard to manage.

For a cast speaking together, organize the group scene as well. Shared world notes do not automatically add participants.

Making a change without conflicting notes

Change the fact where it belongs. If the ferry schedule changes for the setting, edit the world note. If the dispatcher changes an opinion after an argument, update that character's relevant information.

Remove the old version before testing a new exchange. Use World Card attachment settings to confirm that the conversation is using the intended background.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a World Card for every character?

No. Start with a character definition and greeting. A World Card becomes useful when background needs to be shared or maintained separately.

Where should I put a detail that changed during one chat?

Keep a story-specific change in the relevant conversation's memory or pins unless it also changes the shared setting.
